What Is Preventative Dentistry?

Preventative dentistry is just how it sounds—it’s the practice of preventing the existence or progression of dental problems. This type of dentistry focuses on maintaining the health of your teeth, gums, and mouth through routine checkups, home care, and education. In the event that we do discover a dental problem, we use procedures to intervene and stop it in its tracks.

Practicing Prevention At Home

Taking care of your smile at home is easily one of the most important steps in practicing preventative dentistry. This is because it’s where the majority of your dental care takes place. While our team takes exemplary care of you in the office, we typically only see you twice a year (unless recommended otherwise). That means that most of the work when it comes to preventative dentistry is up to you. To ensure your oral health remains in the best condition possible, be sure to:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day
  • Floss daily
  • Use an antibacterial mouthwash
  • Avoid sugary and acidic foods and drinks
  • Schedule regular appointments with your dentist
  • Wear an occlusal guard, if recommended

Cleanings & Exams

Regular check-ups at our office are an integral part of preventative dentistry, as they allow us to keep a close eye on your oral health and intervene if needed. During these visits, our team will check for any signs of decay, gum disease, and other oral health issues. We may also take digital x-rays, if necessary. Additionally, we’ll clean your teeth to remove any plaque and tartar buildup, which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

Once the cleaning has concluded and we have reviewed your exam results, we will provide personalized feedback and suggestions on how to better care for your smile at home. This may include dietary changes, tips on brushing and flossing correctly, or a recommendation to use a new oral health product.

Tooth Extractions

While we recognize that the thought of a tooth extraction can be daunting, it is sometimes necessary to ensure your oral health and well-being. We will only recommend a tooth extraction when a tooth has become too damaged by disease or trauma to be saved by other means.
